About Claude Code

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool that lives in your terminal, understands your entire codebase, and carries out real development tasks through natural-language commands. Unlike autocomplete tools, Claude Code operates at the project level: it reads files, plans changes across multiple modules, runs tests, fixes failures, and delivers commit-ready code. Available as a CLI, a VS Code and JetBrains extension, a desktop app, and a web version at claude.ai/code.

Pros

A context window of up to 1 million tokens (via API), which lets you load entire monorepos without manual chunking. True agentic execution — Claude reads, edits, tests, and iterates until the task is done, rather than just suggesting a single line. Native integration with MCP, skills, and plugins. Supports multiple models (Sonnet 4.6, Opus 4.7, Haiku 4.5) with automatic fallback. Runs in the terminal, IDE, desktop, browser, and mobile, with sessions portable across surfaces. Granular permissions and a cautious mode by default (it asks for confirmation before modifying files).

Cons

Costs can scale quickly under heavy use: Max 20x users report burning through their quota in 5-hour windows during heavy refactors. Plan mode doesn't prevent bad plans — it only prevents edits during planning, so the developer still needs to review critically. The CLI gets features first; anyone working 100% in JetBrains or VS Code may be a version behind. Non-Anthropic models don't work: Claude Code only runs with Claude (on Anthropic, Bedrock, Vertex, or Foundry). In very large codebases, even with 1M tokens, managing context takes discipline (/compact, subagents, a well-written CLAUDE.md).

Who it is for

Claude Code starts at US$17/month on the annual Pro plan (US$20 monthly) and scales up to US$200/month on Max 20x for heavy use with multiple agents running in parallel. For teams, Team Premium costs US$100/seat/month (annual) with a 5-seat minimum and includes SSO, centralized billing, and admin controls. There's also a pay-as-you-go via API option, billed per million tokens (starting at US$1/MTok on Haiku 4.5), and an Enterprise plan on request with a 500K-token context window, HIPAA-readiness, and audit logs.

Conclusion

Claude Code is today one of the most mature agentic coding tools on the market. At FlowCode, we use it every day to accelerate deliveries from weeks to days — keeping human review where it matters.
